Felice Caivano: Women’s Work

Felice Caivano’s exhibit “Women’s Work” hung in Wistariahurst’s gallery, consisting of hundreds of doilies artfully displayed and curated. Felice Caivano’s collection was arranged into three large scale installation artworks that took weeks to install. This exhibit brought to light the artistic and skillful works of women, showcasing this needlework in a public space. This work utilizes the traditional needle art of doilies to draw attention to markers of identity, shared experiences, and memories carried by their makers. “ I see the individual doily as a shared symbol of customs that suggest the transfer of material culture by way of needlework practices,” says Caivano. “Each common doily serves as a reminder of the many hands of their makers and the varied traditions they represent.”
