LXXXIX

Tuesday, Sept. 27.

We went to the Louvre this morning and devoted ourselves to the statuary.  The gem of the collection is the Venus of Milo.  The most perfect likeness of woman ever made, the other masterpieces are Melpomene, a statue seven feet high carved in one piece, the largest statue in Europe, Diana and the Stag, the fighting Gladiator, and two slaves by Michael Angelo.  The rain prevented us from going anywhere this afternoon.  This morning father left on the 9.20 train for Lyons.
