As we reach the end of the pop-up run of Homespun ~ Hilandería: 100 Years of Textile Arts in Holyoke we invite you to kick your heels up with us at Frock, a festive closing party where you can view the exhibit, mingle with the artists, and enjoy drinks and refreshments in the halls of Wistariahurst. Music by mandolin trio Serenata Mandolin Trio will raise your spirits along with eclectic beats by DJ Iohann Rashi Vega later in the evening.
Frock will be a celebration of the individual artists that contributed to Homespun and of the living legacy of the fiber arts, with a special emphasis on its most ubiquitous manifestation in our daily lives: the clothes we wear. For this special evening we invite you to WEAR SOMETHING HANDMADE, by you or someone you know, as a way to start a dialogue about our relationship to the clothes we wear and the urgency of shifting the way we think about and shop for clothes. In the last 50 years, the United States has gone from producing 95% of its own clothing to 3%. These days, we can buy new clothes so cheaply that they are almost disposable; over 14 million tons of textile waste ends up in American landfills each year.
