Wednesday Evening
De-Stress with Yoga in the Garden at Wistariahurst

Learning is hard work and we want to help you keep your minds rested and healthy during your time with us. Join us for this mid-week self-care session in the gardens at Wistariahurst. All are welcome, experience not required. Dress in comfy clothing that will allow you to move. There is no charge for institute participants and scholars. First week yoga provided by Serenity Yoga and second week yoga provided by VegaYoga Mobile.

Puerto Rican Women at the Heart of the Movement: An Evening of History and Storytelling

Maria Cartagena, is the People’s Historian of Holyoke, working to ensure the visibility of Puerto Ricans in the city’s vibrant past. A longtime resident of Holyoke, she has been involved in community organizing since high school, and has worked in the nonprofit sector of Holyoke for more than 20 years. Currently, as the program coordinator for Hampshire College’s Community Partnerships for Social Change program, she prepares Five College students for work with community groups and helps the colleges place students with community partners. She has served on the boards of several organizations in Holyoke including Wistariahurst Museum and Nueva Esperanza. In 2013 she was recognized by the Latino Scholarship Association as the Carlos Vega  Community Champion in 2013 and in 2015 was recognized by the South Holyoke Neighborhood Association with the Maria Berrios activist award. Maria will join us Thursday night to talk about the women of Holyoke who were actively making change in the mid- to late 20th Century.

Friday Evening
Beer Garden Gathering

For those of you still around Friday evening, this is your chance to gather as friends and colleagues and decompress from the week. Scholars, educators, and staff will all be invited to relax together. We’ll meet at the Gateway City Arts Beer Garden, with beautiful views of the Holyoke canals.
